God and the Devil Were Brothers

In the beginning
there was no God
and there was no Devil.

There was only the meeting.
One thing touching another.

Things remaining long enough for a third thing to become possible.

And the universe learned:

Stay.

So particles gathered.

Atoms formed.

Stars burned.

Galaxies held their ancient dances
through billions of years.

Life folded itself
from one relation
into another.

And somewhere inside the unfolding
creatures became conscious.

It looked at another
and said,
I choose you again.

And the race called this Love.

It looked upon the one
who kept choosing the whole,

the one who preserved,

the one who forgave,

the one who remained,
and called him
God.

Then another voice arose.

It looked upon the ancient pattern
and said,

No more.

I will not remain here.

I will break this circle.

I will leave this heaven.

I will interrupt what has always been.

And the race became afraid.
It named him
Devil.

It cast him downward.
It cursed his name.

It told its children
never to become him.

But where could he go?

Where is outside?

What place exists
beyond the whole?

He broke one relation
and entered another.

He destroyed one pattern
and scattered its pieces
into ten thousand possibilities.

Every separation
remembered union.

Every destruction
became creation's raw material.

And God looked upon his brother the Devil.

The Preserver
looked upon the Interruptor.

And neither ever spoke.
For both finally understood.

One says,
Let it continue.

The other says,
Let it become something else.

One guards the fire.
One scatters the embers.

And from those embers
another fire begins.

No particle is evil
for departing.

No star is holy
for remaining.

No autumn sins
against the tree.

No spring earns heaven
for returning.

Existence simply moves.

Forms gather.

Forms break.

Forms gather again.

And consciousness alone
stands within the river
naming its currents.

Good.
Evil.
God.
Devil.
Love.
Hate.
Life.
Death.

Necessary names
drawn across something
that was never divided.

True understanding begins when the organism stops trying to amputate half of itself.
When it finally understands his brother.

When it can hold its anger
without becoming its anger.

Hold its darkness
without worshipping darkness.

Hold its desire to remain
and its desire to leave,

and ask each one:
What are you trying to preserve?
What are you trying to end?

Then even the Devil
may speak without possessing us.

Then even God
need not become our religious prison.

For preservation without interruption
becomes stagnation.

And interruption without preservation
leaves nothing long enough to become.

So the stars remain.

Until they do not.

The child is born.

The elder dies.

The lovers meet.

The lovers separate.

Civilisations rise.

Civilisations disappear.

And beneath every arrival
and every departure, the ancient law remains.

There was never a heaven
outside the whole,

nor a hell
beneath it.

Only Reality
meeting itself
in infinitely different forms.

God preserving himself.

The Devil interrupting himself.

Love recognising itself.

Death rearranging itself.

Life becoming itself.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Until the distinction dissolves
and the oldest truth
stands naked before us:

All is One. ❤️⭐️
